Over mij

Ik ben kinderreumatoloog en help kinderen met ziekten waarbij hun eigen afweer te actief is en klachten geeft, zoals bij kinderreuma. Kinderreuma komt ongeveer bij 1 op de 1000 kinderen voor en wordt vaak langdurig gemist. Ik overleg daarom graag laagdrempelig met huisartsen, fysiotherapeuten of andere specialisten over kinderen met gewrichtsproblemen. Andere kinderreumatologische problemen die ik zie zijn vasculitis, botontstekingen of lupus. Ik werk samen met de academische kinderreumatologen en probeer goede zorg voor kinderen zo dicht mogelijk bij huis te leveren. Ik ben erg onder de indruk van de zorg en de samenwerking in het ETZ. Naast mijn kinderreumatologie ben ik ook algemeen kinderarts binnen een fantastisch team van kinderartsen in Tilburg.

Ik heb met veel plezier geneeskunde gestudeerd in Maastricht. Na mijn basis opleiding ben ik tropenarts geworden en ik heb 2 jaar in St. Lukes Hospital in Malawi gewerkt. Een klein plattelandsziekenhuis waar iedere dag weer anders was en de patiënten heel arm waren. Ik ben daarna opgeleid tot kinderarts in het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis in Utrecht, waar ik een speciale interesse kreeg in infectieziekten/immunologie en reumatologie. In 2012 ben ik met mijn gezin naar Engeland verhuisd, waar ik 9 jaar gewerkt heb in het universiteitsziekenhuis in Southampton. Ik heb daar onderzoek gedaan naar infectieziekten zoals malaria, meningitis en medicatie studies gedaan. Ik ben gepromoveerd op het ontwikkelen van een gecontroleerd infectie model met kinkhoest waarin ik gezonde vrijwilligers neusdruppels heb gegeven met kinkhoest bacteriën. Ze kregen antibiotica voordat ze ziek werden. Tevens ben ik kinderreumatoloog geworden in Southampton. In 2021 zijn we weer terug gekomen naar Nederland waar ik in Tilburg ben neergestreken. Ik werk nu met veel plezier in het ETZ en vind het leuk de algemene kindergeneeskunde te combineren met de kinderreumatologie en het opleiden van toekomstige kinderartsen. Sinds 2023 ben ik opleider kindergeneeskunde. Daarnaast werk ik 1 dag per week in het RadboudUMC waar ik onderzoek doe door middel van gecontroleerde infectie studies bij gezonde vrijwilligers.
